Sketchbook (Replica)

China has ventured into Antarctica since the 1980s, and established its first permanent scientific research station, the Great Wall Station, in 1985. To date, the expedition team continues to overcome various environmental challenges in their daily lives in order to conduct international research work successfully. The scientific research covers multiple disciplines, including physical sciences such as atmospheric science, oceanography, glaciology and geology, as well as biology and ecology. This sketchbook illustrates the faces and experiences of the members who participated in China's Seventh Antarctic Scientific Expedition from 1990 to 1991.

Climate Witness: Changing Polar Landscapes

16 Dec 2023 – 31 Aug 2024

‘Climate Witness: Changing Polar Landscapes’ is a multimedia exhibition with images, sounds, videos and sketches captured by generations of reporters and advocates, revealing stories of the many witnesses of Polar dynamics over recent decades. These experiences should hopefully encourage a greater audience to take on the responsibility of becoming change-makers in climate action and sustainability.

The exhibition, co-curated with MoCC Scholar Natalie Chung, made use of image exhibits to reflect on her earlier research trip with renowned oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle to Antarctica, and drew on an inter-generational dialogue with different people on polar sciences and climate action.

Into the Extreme: A Scientific Journey of Xuelong 2

9 Apr – 31 Aug 2024

The Xuelong 2 is China’s first domestically built polar icebreaker and scientific research vessel. It is dedicated to conducting scientific expeditions to study climate change. It undertakes important tasks and has carried out several scientific expeditions to the North and South Poles.

In this exhibition, scientist Natalie will take you aboard the Xuelong 2 as it embarks on an Antarctic expedition. This will give you a deeper understanding of the research work and the challenges faced by the Xuelong 2, including harsh weather conditions, remote locations and difficulties in assuring supplies.
